In combat defense systems, Krav Maga stands out for its real-world applicability. The Israeli martial art is known worldwide for its practicality and emphasis on survival. I scoured dozens of websites, watched hours of YouTube videos, and I even joined a Krav Maga class for five months to better depict the fight scenes in Cartel Hunter.

Krav Maga means “contact combat” in Hebrew. It was developed by Imi Lichtenfeld, a Slovakian-Israeli martial artist and self-defense instructor. He drew upon his extensive experience in boxing, wrestling, and street fighting, blending them with his observations of real-life conflicts. In the 1940s, he began teaching the system to the Israeli military and law enforcement, refining it to suit the demands of real-world combat situations. Since then, Krav Maga has evolved into a comprehensive self-defense system that caters to individuals of all backgrounds and fitness levels.

The Israel martial art is celebrated for its simplicity and focus on instinctive movements. Its techniques are designed to be easy to learn and execute, enabling practitioners to defend themselves effectively in high-stress situations. It strongly emphasizes realistic training scenarios, and I can confirm firsthand that training can often lead to bumps, bruises, and occasionally minor injuries.

Krav Maga’s origins in real-life conflict and its aggressive counterattacks, weapons defense tactics, and improvisation make it a unique self-defense. It combines elements of boxing and wrestling with martial arts movements taken from Aikido, Judo, and Karate, making it the ideal self-defense system for the protagonist in the Jason Mulder Thriller series.

I loved every minute of my Krav Maga training and am proud to have achieved a yellow belt. I’m taking off the summer to let some of the bumps and bruises heal, and I’m not yet sure if I’ll resume training in the fall. If not, I’ll try something else to help me continue to write fast-paced action thrillers with compelling characters in exciting scenes.
